When it comes to high-precision systems and machines, a wide variety of tools are employed to ensure accuracy and effectiveness. This might include DRO encoders, linear scale, rotary encoders, and much more. While DRO encoders and rotary encoders have been covered in detail, the focus of the current blog is on linear scales. Here is the basic working and applications of this device.
A linear scale is a device used in measuring and positioning systems that basically comprises two parts, the scale responsible for encoding the position and a sensor. The sensor also has different names in some cases, including a transducer and reader head.
Based on the reading on the scale, the sensor/transducer converts it into a reading in the digital or analog format.
A linear scale has multiple varieties such as an optical scale, a magnetic scale, an inductive, a capacitative or even an eddy current scale. However, the most prominently used are optical and magnetic linear scales. Of these two, optical scales are the most preferred due to their excellent accuracy.
The main applications of linear scales are twofold:
These encompass devices wherein there is a need for measuring movements/motion such as lathes, milling machines, EDM, drilling machines, profile projectors, coordinate measuring machines and a whole lot more.
It is important to note that linear scale size can vary depending on the application. For instance, coordinate measuring machines and profile projectors require smaller linear scales when compared to milling machines and lathes.
In this instance, the linear scales are used primarily to enable accurate, high-speed movement. Some common examples include servo-controlled motors used in robotics, assembly lines, digital presses, semiconductor handling equipment and more.
