Understanding The Basics Of Digital Readout Systems

In the world of CNC and machining, the term digital readout system or DRO is quite integral. However, what exactly is a DRO system/unit, and how does it function? In this blog, Walker Machinery Inc., a leading supplier of premier DRO units and CNC control systems in Canada, explores this basic concept in detail.

What Is A Digital Readout System?

A DRO is a numerical display that is primarily used on manual as well as CNC machines to show the position of the cutting tool during operation. A staple in lathing, milling and grinding processes, it is known for its accurate tool positioning, thereby automating the calculations and reducing and eliminating instances of human error altogether.

Furthermore, since the process is automated, the machinists don’t have to manually measure the workpiece to ensure accuracy, thereby reducing downtime and increasing productivity.

Working Principle Of Digital Readout Systems

The DRO system has 3 primary working components, the encoder, the computer and the numeric display. The encoder tracks the position of the machine or tool along a two or three-dimensional axis. This signal is then sent to the computer, which in turn converts this to a numerical, trackable metric and displays it.

For example, take a DRO that operates along three axes, X, Y and Z on a milling machine. The X and Y axes denote the horizontal position of the milling machine table whereas the Z axis denotes the vertical motion of the cutting tool. In this way, digital readout systems help keep accurate track of the tool with respect to the workpiece at all times.

Lastly, there are a wide variety of encoders used in digital readout units. However, the primary classification includes linear and rotary encoders. Their differences and types will be addressed in detail in the subsequent blog.
