3 Primary Types Of Digital Encoders

3 Primary Types Of Digital Encoders

In the previous blog, the basic functioning of a digital readout system was explored in detail. An encoder is a key part of this digital readout unit. In essence, an encoder records the movement of a workpiece or a particular machine and converts it into an easily understandable metric. There are essentially 3 main types of digital encoders used in most digital readout systems. Their functioning and features will be addressed below.

Types Of Digital Encoders

Linear Encoders

This type of digital encoder measures a straight or linear motion. The sensor head, which is responsible for measuring the movement of the tool or workpiece, is connected to the moving piece. This sensor is further attached to the encoder that contains a scale within. This scale translates the motion into an analog or digital signal and sends the readings to the CNC control system.

Rotary Encoders

As the name suggests, a rotary encoder measures the rotational movement of the moving piece. They are mounted on the rotating shaft of the device and offer measurements on the basis of changes in the shaft’s movement. The primary application of a rotary encoder is to monitor and manage the speed of the rotating device. However, the accuracy of rotary encoders is not perfect and most encoders allow a minuscule deviation of +/- 10 arcseconds. That being said, a single revolution has 21,600 arc seconds, so the small deviation is inconsequential in most cases.

Angle Encoders

Lastly, angle encoders are also rotary encoders, but they are just more precise. Their level of accuracy can be as high as +/- 0.04 arcseconds.
